Tips and tricks: Daemonic Gifts

The new Daemons of Chaos and Chaos Daemons books have Daemonic Gifts, which function very differently to the normal Magic Items and Wargear. You can buy a number of gifts of a certain type, but you don’t determine what they are until the start of the game.

Here’s how I would cater for Daemonic Gifts in Quartermaster.

  1. Make sure you have version 4.3 of Quartermaster or greater.
  2. Add all the Exalted Gifts, Greater Gifts, and Lesser Gifts to the items list for the Quartermaster template. Give each gift a cost of 0 points.
  3. For any character or unit that can purchase Daemonic Gifts, add a Command option for each different type they’re allowed, up to the maximum they can buy.
    • For example, if a Fantasy character is allowed gifts up to a total cost of 50 points, add a Command upgrade for “Greater Gift” up to a maximum of 1 with a cost of 50 points, and a Command upgrade for “Lesser Gift” up to a maximum of 2 with a cost of 25 points.
  4. For each Command option you created for the gifts, add item allowances. Enter the type of Daemonic Gift, and set no points limit.

Now you’ll be able to equip the Command options during list creation to show the types of Daemonic Gifts you’re buying. Then, once you roll for the gifts at the start of a game, choose the Daemonic Gift from the Magic Items or Wargear list for the Command option representing the gift you just rolled.

★ Share game systems ★

You can now export your game systems, making it much easier to share your common Magic Items list. Import shared game system files in the same way as army list files and template files.

  1. From the Edit Templates view, tap the blue disclosure button for the game system on iPhone, or tab the Edit Items button for the game system on iPad.
  2. In the Items view, tap the Share button.

★ Open files in other apps ★

Open army list files, template files, and game system files in compatible apps. Compatible apps include Dropbox and other cloud storage services, local file storage apps, and text-editing apps for advanced tinkering.

  1. Tap the Share button from any army list view, template view, or system items view.
  2. Tap the Open In button and choose the other app.

★ Magic Item and Wargear allowances for unit command ★

Templates now allow unit command characters to be given item allowances. Give unit characters access to magic items or wargear, and give unit standard bearers access to magic banners.

  1. When editing a template, tap the ‘add item allowances’ cell.
  2. Edit item allowances in the same manner as for Lords, Heroes, and HQ characters.

★ Better use of special rules ★

Add special rules to your magic items, wargear, and unit options to create a quick reference for your army.

  • Add special rules to magic items and wargear.
  • Special rules for items are listed with the option when creating lists.
  • Any magic items, wargear, and unit options with special rules are listed below the published list.

★ Improved published lists and summaries ★

Several changes have been made to improve the usefulness and readability of the published lists and summaries.

  • Simplified navigation lets you access both published lists and summaries straight from the Share button.
  • Any upgrades with special rules but without profiles are now listed below the published list.
  • Summaries are now even more streamlined, removing unnecessary details.
  • Published list layouts now look cleaner.

★ Improved template editing ★

Editing options and upgrades in templates is now quicker and easier.

  • Auto-correct is now active when entering unit and option names. Originally I thought this would be annoying with all the non-standard words in the games, but as iOS learns new words over time it becomes really useful for quick data entry.
  • New options default to being equipped automatically with a cost of 0, making it quicker to add standard equipment for units.
  • As soon as a cost is added for an option, it is set to not being equipped automatically, as it must be a paid option.
  • When setting the ‘equip’ setting, choose ‘equip once for the unit’ for quick single options.
  • The ‘equip up to a set maximum’ option now defaults to 2, the most common maximum.

★ Helpful hints and links ★

Authoring templates is hard work. Quartermaster now contains a few helpful hints and links to online resources to get you started more quickly.

  • Go straight to the online user manual from the template editing view.
  • Search the web for shared templates.
  • Create a template just for 40k Fortifications and add it as an allied detachment to include Fortifications in your army.

Quartermaster 4.2.4 is a minor update. The list for adding allies now displays correctly.

40k allies in Quartermaster 4.2.3

I rushed to fix the bugs in 4.2.2 before the Christmas shutdown period, and unfortunately the problems with adding 40k allies is still not completely fixed.

In Quartermaster 4.2.3, when you go to add an allied detachment to your 40k army, the list of available templates is displayed incorrectly. It will show the first of your 40k templates, but then displays the rest of the list incorrectly. However, the problem is only with displaying the list of templates; you can still add the allied template. Tap any of the incorrectly-displayed rows to add the corresponding 40k template.

So for example, if you have templates for Chaos Daemons, Chaos Space Marines, and Imperial Guard, your list of ally templates will have three rows in total: the first will show Chaos Daemons, then the second and third row will incorrectly display “create new WHFB template”. If you wanted to add an allied Chaos Space Marine attachment, they are the second template in your list alphabetically, so you would tap the second row to add them. For Imperial Guard, tap the third row.

Sorry for the inconvenience. I’ll try to get the bug resolved as soon as possible after the Christmas shutdown.
